This is my first view of what was to become my home for the next 21 years, although I say my first view it was My mum and Dads, my dad John Alexander Bracewell (Jack) took the picture in 1946 ,there first viewing of the house, the lady holding the child is my mum Elsie Bracewell ,the child is of course me.
At the door of No2 stands Mrs Styles who lived there and moved round the corner to No 10. the ladies next door No4 and seated I think is Mrs Hooper and another?

Three Pits Cottages were built in around 1754 and were built in a square of twenty houses.
occupied by working class folk they were pit workers weavers (some with looms at home) .
I lived there at number 2 from 1947 till 1967 when I got married and moved to Oldham.
A picture I found in the Middleton Guardian in the 1960 shows one of the houses was a pub “Gardeners Arms” outside clog shod men stand proudly with there whippets,
Whipit racing was popular, as to was cock fighting .
I know the house where we lived was rented, and I'm sure somewhere back over the years they were owned by the Assheton
Estate at Hopwood Hall ??

I have on a very infrequent visit to Middleton library found a list of people who were killed at the Peterloo Massacre one John Rhodes was listed as living at Pits Cottages often wondered if he was one of the residents .
